Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions South Lake Tahoe patients ask us most about chiropractic care.

New to chiropractic, or just have questions before your first visit? Here are clear, no-pressure answers. Still not sure about something? Reach out — we are always happy to help.

What does a chiropractor do?+

Chiropractors assess and care for problems of the spine, joints, muscles, and nervous system. Using hands-on adjustments along with guidance on movement, posture, and at-home exercises, we help support healthy motion and ease discomfort, without drugs or surgery as the first step.

Is chiropractic care safe?+

For most people, chiropractic adjustments are generally safe when performed by a licensed chiropractor. We begin with a thorough history and exam to make sure care is appropriate for you, and we tailor the technique and force to your age, comfort level, and condition.

Does an adjustment hurt?+

Most patients feel little to no discomfort, and some feel noticeably looser afterward. You may hear a soft "pop," which is simply gas releasing from the joint. If you are sore, tense, or prefer a lighter touch, let us know and our chiropractors will adapt their technique to your comfort.

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?+

No. No referral is needed to see a chiropractor in California, so you can call our office or request an appointment directly.

How many visits will I need?+

It depends on your needs, how long you have had a concern, and your goals. After your exam, our chiropractors explain what they found and recommend an individualized plan. Some patients come in for a specific concern; others choose regular wellness visits as part of staying active.

Will my insurance cover chiropractic care?+

Coverage for chiropractic care varies from plan to plan. Please call our office at (530) 541-5660 to ask about insurance and payment options. Our front desk team is happy to help with billing questions.

What conditions do chiropractors help with?+

Common reasons people see us include back pain, neck pain, headaches and migraines, sciatica, disc problems, whiplash and auto-injury, sports and work injuries, and poor posture. Care can also support everyday mobility and overall wellness.

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?+

For many expecting moms, gentle, pregnancy-adapted chiropractic care is a comfortable way to support the lower back, hips, and pelvis as the body changes. Dr. Emma Freeze is Webster Technique certified and has a special interest in prenatal care. Prenatal chiropractic care is complementary care and does not replace prenatal medical care, and we encourage ongoing communication with your obstetric care provider.

Can children and babies see a chiropractor?+

Yes. Pediatric chiropractic care uses gentle, age-appropriate techniques to support a child's musculoskeletal health, movement, and comfort. Our chiropractors review your child's health history first to determine whether care is appropriate, and parents are always involved.

What should I expect on my first visit?+

We listen to your story, perform a full chiropractic exam, explain what we find in plain language, and, when clinically appropriate, provide your first gentle adjustment the same day. Please allow a little extra time for this first visit.

What is the popping sound during an adjustment?+

That sound is called cavitation — a small release of gas, like bubbles, from the fluid inside your joint. It is normal, painless, and not your bones cracking. Some gentle techniques produce no sound at all.

How is chiropractic different from massage or physical therapy?+

They overlap and often work well together. Chiropractic focuses on restoring proper joint motion and nervous-system function through adjustments, massage targets soft tissue, and physical therapy emphasizes rehabilitative exercise. If another type of care would serve you better, we are happy to point you in the right direction.

Once I start, do I have to keep going forever?+

No. Your care is always your choice. Some patients come in for a specific concern and stop once they feel better; others choose regular wellness visits because they simply feel and move better. We will give you our honest recommendation and respect your decision.

Are you accepting new patients?+

Yes. Tahoe Chiropractic Clinic welcomes new patients of all ages, from pregnancy and infancy through adulthood. Ask about our $47 New Patient Special when you call.
