Leg pain care in South Lake Tahoe. Our chiropractors look for the source — low back, hip, knee, or muscle — and build a gentle, drug-free plan around it.
Chiropractic care for leg pain
A whole-body look at your leg pain
Also known as: Leg Aches, Radiating Leg Pain, Thigh Pain
Leg pain doesn't always start in the leg itself. Often it's coming from somewhere higher up — an irritated nerve in the lumbar spine, a bulging or herniated disc, a tight hip joint, or referred pain from the sacroiliac region. Pinpointing the likely source is the most important first step, and it's where our chiropractors at Tahoe Chiropractic Clinic begin. Whether you live in South Lake Tahoe or Meyers, or cross the state line from Stateline or Zephyr Cove, you get a thorough exam first — then a drug-free plan built around what's actually driving your pain.
Symptoms of leg pain
- ✓Aching, burning, or throbbing pain down one or both legs
- ✓Sharp or electric pain that shoots from the low back or buttock into the thigh or calf
- ✓Numbness or tingling along the outer thigh, calf, or into the foot
- ✓Leg weakness or heaviness when walking or climbing stairs
- ✓Pain that worsens with sitting, standing for long periods, or bending forward
- ✓Cramping or tightness in the hamstrings, thighs, or calves
- ✓Relief when lying down, which can point to spinal or nerve involvement
Common causes
- Sciatica from a lumbar nerve root compressed by a disc or bone spur
- Herniated or bulging disc in the lower back
- Spinal stenosis narrowing the space around lumbar nerve roots
- Sacroiliac joint dysfunction referring pain into the thigh
- Hip joint degeneration or labral irritation
- Piriformis syndrome compressing the sciatic nerve through the buttock
- Knee-joint strain, overuse, or biomechanical misalignment
Our approach
How we treat leg pain in South Lake Tahoe
- Step 1
Thorough exam
We assess your lumbar spine, hips, knees, and the way you walk to trace the pain toward its source — nerve, joint, disc, or muscle — before we treat anything. If imaging would change your care, we'll refer you for it.
- Step 2
A clear, personalized plan
Before care begins, we explain what we found in plain English and recommend a plan written for your case and your goals — not a generic protocol. You always decide what's right for you.
- Step 3
Targeted care & corrective exercise
Depending on your exam, care may combine chiropractic adjustments, hands-on lumbar flexion-distraction (our spinal decompression), and at-home corrective exercises to help ease nerve irritation and joint stress, then support the strength and movement patterns that keep you active.
The basics
Understanding leg pain
The leg is the endpoint of a long chain — nerves exit the lumbar spine, travel through the hips and pelvis, and branch all the way to the toes. When something compresses or irritates a nerve root at the spine (think a herniated disc or a narrowed foramen), pain, numbness, or tingling can radiate down the path of that nerve — often into the thigh, calf, or foot — without anything being "wrong" with the leg itself. This is called radicular (nerve-root) pain, and it's more common than many people expect. Sciatica is the best-known example, and it's often linked to a disc injury or spinal stenosis; piriformis syndrome can produce a similar pattern.
Leg pain can also originate locally — from the hip joint, the knee, or the muscles themselves — through overuse, injury, or movement habits that put chronic stress on a structure. For active people on the South Shore, a long day of hiking, skiing, or mountain biking can be the tipping point. Because the causes look so similar from the outside (an aching or burning sensation running down the leg), an accurate assessment matters. Treating a muscle strain with spinal decompression, or treating a pinched nerve with a knee brace, is unlikely to help. Our exam aims to identify the likely source so your care plan is aimed at the right place.

Types of leg pain we treat
Leg pain looks like one problem but can hide several very different causes. We help South Shore patients with:
- Sciatica — one of the most common patterns of radiating leg pain; an irritated lumbar nerve sends burning or electric pain from the low back through the buttock and down the leg. See our full sciatica page for a deeper look.
- Disc-related radiculopathy — a bulging or herniated disc in the lumbar spine pressing on a nerve root, producing leg pain, numbness, or weakness. Spinal decompression, our gentle, hands-on lumbar flexion-distraction technique, may be especially helpful here.
- Referred pain from the low back — restricted or inflamed lumbar joints that can refer a dull ache into the buttock or thigh without nerve compression; see back pain.
- Hip-joint referred pain — hip degeneration, labral irritation, or sacroiliac dysfunction that can send an aching sensation into the groin, outer thigh, or knee. See our hip pain page.
- Knee-related leg pain — patellofemoral stress, meniscal irritation, or patellar tracking problems that cause pain from the knee down. See our knee pain page.
- Piriformis syndrome — the piriformis muscle in the deep buttock can irritate the sciatic nerve, mimicking disc-driven sciatica; it often improves with targeted stretching and corrective exercise.
- Muscular and overuse strain — hamstring, quadriceps, or calf strain from skiing, hiking, mountain biking, running, or physical work; many people improve with gradual loading and targeted corrective exercise.
Your exam tells us which pattern best fits your leg pain so we can build a plan for your case — not a one-size-fits-all protocol.
When to see a chiropractor in South Lake Tahoe
Don’t wait out leg pain if you notice any of these — earlier care often makes recovery easier:
- Pain, burning, or numbness that travels from your low back or buttock into the thigh, calf, or foot
- Leg weakness or heaviness that makes walking, climbing stairs, or getting up from a chair harder than normal
- Pain that started or worsened after a back strain, lifting injury, or a disc problem
- Leg pain combined with low back stiffness, even if the back itself doesn’t hurt much
- Symptoms that shift or change when you change your seated or standing posture
- Leg pain that has lasted more than a week or keeps returning after brief improvement
Seek emergency care immediately if leg pain comes with sudden loss of bladder or bowel control, saddle-area numbness, or rapidly progressing leg weakness — these can be signs of a serious neurological problem. If your calf is swollen, warm, red, or tender — especially after a long drive, flight, surgery, or time off your feet — seek prompt medical care, as these can be signs of a blood clot.
What to expect at your first visit
Your first appointment is focused on understanding your leg pain before we treat it:
- Listen to your story — where the pain is, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and whether it changes with posture or movement.
- Examine thoroughly — orthopedic, neurological, and movement testing of the lumbar spine, hips, and knees to trace the pain toward its source. If imaging would genuinely change your care, we’ll refer you for it.
- Explain what we found — in plain English, with a personalized care plan and honest expectations for recovery.
- Start care when appropriate — if your exam shows chiropractic care is a good fit, your first adjustment may happen at the same visit.
You’re never pressured into a plan. We explain our recommendations, answer your questions, and respect your choices.
Drug-free leg pain relief — without medication or surgery
Pain medication can take the edge off for a few hours, but it doesn’t change how your low back, hips, or knees are moving. Surgery is sometimes necessary, but many cases of nerve-related and musculoskeletal leg pain are managed first with conservative care. At Tahoe Chiropractic Clinic, we focus on easing the irritation or structural stress behind your leg pain — then helping you build the strength and movement habits that support staying active. If your exam ever points to a cause that needs imaging, medication, or a specialist, we’ll tell you honestly and refer you.
Why South Shore patients choose Tahoe Chiropractic Clinic
Patients from South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Stateline, Zephyr Cove, Minden, and Gardnerville choose us because we don’t just treat the leg — we look for the source of the pain. Whether it’s a lumbar disc irritating the sciatic nerve, a hip-joint problem referring pain into the thigh, or a local knee or muscle issue, our chiropractors take the time to understand your case and build one clear, drug-free plan around it. Two of our doctors hold degrees in kinesiology, the study of human movement, and our whole team knows how much an active Tahoe life depends on healthy legs — from hiking and paddleboarding in summer to skiing and shoveling snow in winter. We combine chiropractic adjustments, hands-on spinal decompression for the low back, and at-home corrective exercise into a coordinated approach that supports the way you want to move.

What causes leg pain?+
A lot of the leg pain adults experience can come from the lumbar spine — an irritated nerve root from a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or a pinched nerve can send pain, numbness, or tingling down the leg even when the leg itself is structurally fine. Hip-joint problems, sacroiliac dysfunction, piriformis syndrome, and local knee or muscle strain are other common culprits. Our exam looks for the source most likely driving your pain so care targets the right structure.
Can a chiropractor help with radiating leg pain?+
Often, yes. When leg pain comes from irritation of a nerve in the low back, chiropractic adjustments and hands-on lumbar flexion-distraction may help reduce pressure on the nerve root, and many people find their leg symptoms ease as low-back motion improves. We also look at hip and sacroiliac joint function, which can refer pain into the thigh and leg. If your exam points to a cause outside our scope, we'll tell you and refer you to the right provider.
How do I know if my leg pain is coming from my back?+
Leg pain that comes from the back often follows a specific path (such as the outer thigh, calf, or foot), worsens with sitting or bending forward, and often comes with lower back stiffness or soreness — even mild. If pressing on your low back or changing your lumbar position changes the sensation in your leg, that can suggest the spine is involved. Our orthopedic and neurological exam helps sort it out.
How many visits will I need?+
It depends on the cause, how long you've had it, your activity level, and your overall health. After your exam, our chiropractors recommend a personalized plan with clear goals and check your progress along the way, so you always know where you stand. Once you're feeling better, we're also happy to talk about wellness care to help you stay active.
Will my insurance cover leg pain treatment?+
Coverage varies from plan to plan, so please call our office at (530) 541-5660 to ask about insurance and payment options. Our front desk team is happy to help with billing questions.
Is chiropractic care for leg pain safe?+
Chiropractic care is generally considered safe for many people with leg pain when it's appropriate for their condition. We review your health history and examine you thoroughly on your first visit, and we only begin care once we've confirmed it's a good fit for you. Chiropractic adjustments and lumbar flexion-distraction are non-invasive and drug-free, and we adapt our techniques to your comfort.
Can chiropractic help sciatica pain down the leg?+
Often, yes. Sciatica is one of the most common reasons people seek chiropractic care for leg pain. Lumbar adjustments and spinal decompression — a gentle, hands-on flexion-distraction technique for the low back — may help ease the disc pressure or nerve irritation behind the pain. We're honest about whether you're a good candidate, and if you need imaging or a medical or surgical opinion, we'll say so and refer you.
Do you treat leg pain from a disc injury or pinched nerve?+
Yes. Disc bulges, herniations, and pinched nerve roots in the lumbar spine are among the most frequent spine-related causes of leg pain. Our spinal decompression is a gentle, hands-on lumbar flexion-distraction technique designed to open the low-back disc space and help reduce pressure on an irritated nerve. It's used for the low back only, and it's one part of a plan that may also include adjustments and at-home exercises. We see patients from across the South Shore, including South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Stateline, and Kingsbury.
What is the difference between sciatica and general leg pain?+
Sciatica refers to pain from irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve or the lower-back nerve roots that form it. The nerve runs through the buttock and down the back of the leg toward the foot. It tends to produce a sharp, burning, or electric sensation along that specific path. General leg pain may follow a different distribution or stem from the hip, knee, or muscles rather than the spine. A thorough exam — including nerve tension tests and orthopedic assessment — helps distinguish between them.
When is leg pain a medical emergency?+
Seek emergency care right away if leg pain comes with sudden loss of bladder or bowel control, severe numbness in the groin or inner thighs (saddle anesthesia), rapidly worsening leg weakness, or follows a major trauma. These can indicate cauda equina syndrome or another serious problem that requires immediate attention. If your calf is swollen, warm, red, or tender — especially after a long drive, flight, surgery, or time off your feet — seek prompt medical care, as these can be signs of a blood clot. For other leg pain, we're here to help you look for the cause and build a plan around it.
